How do you edit your web site?

Posted on 02 Nov 2010 by Alan Burns

Do you edit the pages directly on the server? Don’t!

Many people edit their web sites directly on the web server, via Internet connection. Perhaps they find it more convenient than to use an editor on their personal computer and subsequently upload via FTP or other means.

Well, you know what? It will be a lot less convenient if their web server has a drive failure and their web site is lost.

Drive failures, crashes and other calamities occur on servers, just as they do on our personal computers. While many web hosts maintain backups, you should not rely on them. For various reasons, the web host’s backups are not always available or reliable.

One such situation occurs when the server’s drive is beginning to fail. The web host’s automated backup may run, reading corrupt or incomplete data from the failing drive, and overwrite the previous backup with this unreliable data. The result is that the backup is either wholly or partially unusable or at least not useful.

If your site is dynamic, with data changing continuously due to a forum or live database, then you will need to look at options for automatic server-based site backups. For your static pages, you should have a copy on your local computer as well as the server, just as you should for a static site.

Edit your site locally on your PC, using whatever type of editing tool you prefer. Some webmasters like to edit in a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) tool, while others prefer a more code-based editor. It doesn’t matter, as long as you do your editing work on your own computer. Once you’re happy with your work, upload the data to your web server.

You should, of course, also have a backup of your PC’s data. Assuming you do, you would always have three copies of your web site: one on your personal computer; one on your local backup; and the live one on your web server.

Editing your site on the server alone is putting all your eggs in one basket. Don’t risk it.
