Question Suggestions for a secure alternative to FTP.

I have been using FTP for about 10 years. I know its not secure. Now with more and more viruses targeting FTP to compromise your website I think its time for a change.

Can anyone suggest something that is free, secure, uses a GUI hopefully and is well documented so I can figure it out. I have been reading about Putty but I am so lost with that one. The way I understand SSH its just a secure connection and I still need another program to take the place of FTP for the actual file transfers. Would it be possible to make WS_FTP connect through Putty? Any advice is appreciated.
    Thank You,

    Hello,

You are right, Putty is only console client which can work over SSH protocol.

Probably you should try WinSCP (http://winscp.net/). It supports both FTP and SCP protocols, has user-friendly interface and is well documented.

Thank You for that suggestion. Should I request SSH access to be able to use winscp?

    Hi,

Yes, you need SSH enabled to use SCP protocol.

Just open a support ticket on our HelpDesk

Thanks guys. Winscp is exactly what I was looking for. I like how you can edit the file locally then when you save it automatically uploads it. Thats very cool. I guess I am easily amused.
